Even as India pitches the strategy of becoming one of the world’s top 10 IT protected nations in the UN’s Global Cyber Security Index, the world’s leading vendor-neutral IT certification body, CompTIA, has recently launched a training and certification program titled, CompTIA PenTest +, to meet the rising demand for professional cybersecurity Penetration Testers in India.
Penetration testing is a mandatory component of IT security spending for every organization in this age of connected and vulnerable IT networks. The government’s push towards digitization and internet coverage has increased the number of user end points that could have potential interfaces with an enterprise system. A recent study on the costs of cyber crime by Accenture indicates that this cost touches an average of USD 11.7 million annually with 130 security breaches being reported per organization every year. The cost to the Indian economy for every data breach is close to US$ 1.8 Million. Cyber attacks are disruptive for businesses or public services and present opportunities for misuse of sensitive information such as financial credentials or competitive strategies.
Hackers are becoming increasingly smarter and dangerously more organized with the rising accessibility of capacity enhancing technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and cryptocurrency mining. Despite the fact that modern IT devices and applications come with advanced inbuilt security features, compromises are continually increasing. The program will teach candidates about launching attacks on systems, discovering vulnerabilities and managing them. “The CompTIA PenTest+ aims to cover the end to end process of penetration testing starting from planning, scoping, information gathering, understanding the different attacks and exploits, mastery on modern penetration testing tools, as well as ways to report and communicate the findings to the management. The program focuses on teaching how to execute penetration testingon different flavors of operating systems as well as modern technology implementations such as ICS (Industrial Control Systems), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition); mobile, IoT (Internet of Things), embedded systems, biometrics, Point of Sale and others.” Added, Mr. Dennis Kwok, Vice President APAC, CompTIA.
The CompTIA Pentest + complements its already existing CySA+ course which covers defensive security strategies. The exam contains both multiple-choice and performance-based questions employing hands-on simulations thus validating hands-on penetration testing skills.
CompTIA recommends that anyone who is interested to take CompTIA Pentest+ certification can either undergo a 40 hour instructor led training program offered by a network of authorized partners spread across the country or can also select self-paced online learning option. It is also recommended that prospective candidates should have 3 to 4 years of hands-on experience performing penetration tests, vulnerability assessments, and vulnerability management.

BMU Students Developed ‘Unlock Me’ Game to Educate Users About COVID-19
A B. Tech student Shreyansh Anchlia along with the ideation from faculty members Dr. Goldie Gabrani and Nishtha Phutela of BML Munjal University (BMU), a Hero Group initiative, has developed a game called ‘Unlock Me’, to help spread awareness about COVID-19. The game serves both an educational as well as an entertainment purpose. The background music has been composed by another B. Tech student of BML Munjal University, Gurramkonda Vishal Bharadwaj. It is available on all Android phones, running Version 4.4 and above. It is a secure app and asks for no personal information to start.
The game plays out as a simulation of real-life risks related to COVID-19, such as players getting infected by coming in the vicinity of coronavirus infected places and people. Players need to make the right choices and be wary of these risky practices as they move through the game, as these reduce their health.
Through a series of events, the player earns sanitizers which act like powerups. After gaining enough experience a question is presented in order to test the player’s knowledge regarding the current scenario. These questions are solved in a different section of the game where samples of the virus are analyzed.
In the course of the game, the player also gets to learn about announcements by the Health Ministry, which also educates them as they progress through the game. After completing a specific number of levels and getting all the answers right, the player unlocks a ‘cure’ for the virus, thereby unlocking a new mode in which the player needs to deliver it to those in need. Unlock Me has been developed in Unity3d as a top-down arcade game. New levels will be added to the game in the coming months, along with an Arena Mode that will get unlocked after level 100.
Speaking on the launch of the game, Prof Maneek Kumar, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology BML Munjal University says, “In these times, we read so many advisories related to COVID-19 but aren’t sure how they’ll play out once we’re out in the open again. The game Unlock me simulates the real-life situations and experiences to help give players an understanding and feel for discriminating between right practices and wrong practices, and thereby reduce their risk of contracting the virus.”
The gaming industry in India is gaining traction steadily, with a deeper penetration of the Internet and increased smartphone usage in the country. “BMU has taken a leap forward in tech innovation to create a game that has a deeper penetration and easier understanding for the masses”, said Prof. Manoj Arora, Vice Chancellor, BMU.
