The AMOLED display has its own set of advantages that make it the first choice among makers as well as consumers. AMOLED display works to illuminate colours by providing true blacks on the background. This is good for HDR content while saving batteries on the other hand. Lately, the terrible “green light” is popping up on the screens of smartphones, mainly with the AMOLED display ones. Here the question arises, what is the green light that displays on phone screens, and how to fix that? Let’s explore with us:
The Green Light – What is it?
Users have been confronting a vertical green line crossing their smartphones’ displays going from top to bottom. Although the mobile phones are working properly outside the green light, yet the line is potentially annoying as quite noticeable.
Cause & Effect
People are complaining and curious about this mysterious green line issue as it is just not harmful but so visible that can’t be ignored. No water damage or drop has been claimed by the affected users. However, many of them claimed that they stumbled upon a software update for their phones that resulted in a green light omission on the screen.
As reported by Android Authority, the green line has come from several smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, realme, vivo, OnePlus, OPPO, iQOO, Xiaomi, HUAWEI, Motorola, Nothing, and even Apple which indicates that the matter is not limited to any handset manufacturer and might be originated from software or the hardware defect.
The green light issue is common to AMOLED displays that are 1-2 years old and out of warranty, but it doesn’t mean the newer or older devices are not affected by the issue necessarily.
Single green light is reported in most cases, however, in rare cases, users are coming across more than one line and even flickering, also affecting colouring of the screen. The green line is almost permanent that appears on the lock screen, home screen, and on Always-On display.
Why Does Green Line Appear?
The green line issue is there in the picture for years, yet no reports have been released by LCD phone owners, although the same problem has been reported in LCD devices as well. The reason might be a defective, loose, or damaged display connector, and flex cable that attaches the display to the motherboard, it can permanently damage the display.
However, the issue can happen due to accidentally piercing the display, dropping it, putting sustained pressure, water damage, and so and so. But the phone warranty does not cover either of them. However, software updates and connector issues are also anticipated to be defaulters, but there is no certain conclusion behind the problem.
But considering the streak, how random the problem has bothered users, no real reason has been found, and neither precaution could be suggested on mere assumption.
How to Fix It?
The only solution is to replace the display to fix the green light problem from the user end.
Restarting your phone might also help Android phones, as this step might rule out the software issue possibility. Of course, it is not a permanent fix but can save you from unnecessarily visit to the service centre.
Visit Service Centre
Now that you are clear that there is no software issue, you can pay a visit to the service centre or initiate RMA on your phone. Dial the number of the support team and take the advised step.
What Does Warranty Say Of Green Line Issue?
Mostly, the brands don’t have any clear or direct policy covering the green line issue. So, the approach by the brands may differ from one to another, wherein your phone will be repaired by the brand.
Especially phones with one year warranty if fall under the guaranteed period and shows no external or water damage sign, chances are high the phone will be repaired recognizing it is a hardware defect.
In the case of out-of-warranty phones, you are not eligible for a free repair and a high amount is quoted by the service centre executive that might be 10-30% of your phone purchase amount.
However, as per the reports, OEMs like OnePlus, Samsung, and Apple have instructed their support channels to assist and repair the devices affect by the green line issue for free, no matter device is beyond the warranty period.
Such advisories, however, are not announced in the public domain, but they do provide assistance at their service centres and handle the issue on a case-by-case basis.
